Synopsis

The 3D 360° documentary Workers entering the Factory invites the viewers to step into the world of a jute factory in Bangladesh. As an immersive virtual reality experience, they accompany the workers into the jute mill from a first-person perspective and observe the workforce as they process the “golden fibre”.

We are familiar with the material as yarn or bags, but we have no contact with the manufacturing process and the reality of life on site. Workers entering the Factory shows us up close how people produce the fibres for our clothing, ropes, carpets and packaging materials from raw jute. This “look behind the scenes” allows you to experience the noise, the monotony of the work processes and the fine jute fibres in the air.

Over 60% of the world’s jute is grown and processed in Bangladesh. In total, almost 4 million people in Bangladesh are directly or indirectly involved in its production. Their lives have been closely intertwined with jute for generations.

The German version of the website can be accessed here.

For generations, it has been part of our everyday life: twisted into yarn, pressed into mattresses, woven into bags. Even its leaves are nutritious and eaten as vegetables or brewed into tea. No wonder jute is celebrated as the national plant of Bangladesh.

For all those who would like to learn more about the jute manufacturing processes, I have created a virtual 360° tour of the Wave Jute Textile Mill in Bangladesh, where Workers entering the Factory was shot. Here you can gain a deeper insight into the individual steps of the jute processing – from the fibre to the finished yarn. The question of how jute compares to plastic in terms of its ecological footprint also plays a significant role.

The tour was developed and implemented in collaboration with the SCIP Plastics project at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.  Enjoy exploring!
